How to overcome self-pity

Published on January 11, 2020

Come on! Why are you thinking as if what you are going through is unique to you? Maybe you are thinking that I will be telling you that you are justified for feeling sorry for yourself. Why should I lie to you? What will I profit if I contributed to making your condition more deplorable?

If you want me to tell you what you want to hear, then you will be disappointed.

In 2009 I was laid off in the oil and gas industry. The economy was bad and oil prices plummeted. The issue is not that I was laid off. My greatest challenge was my immigration status. Being an international worker without a work permit meant that I could not get another job. Not only was it almost impossible to get a job, but I also had my wife, and four children that were depending on me 100%. In order to remain legal in the country, I had to go back to go using my credit card to pay for MBA classes.

I was digging a debt hole without knowing when I will get out of it.

What hole are you in? What is it that is making you feel like giving up? What is that mountain before you that has caused you to lose all hope? Who is that person that has pushed you to the brink? Are you going to allow other people and the circumstances surrounding you to determine the outcome of your life? Why will you do that?

There only remedy to self-pity is to remind yourself that life is tough. That is, it! Life is tough and the only thing you can do is to toughen up. When things get tough you have to toughen up!

If you choose to complain, blame and make excuses you will get stuck. While complaining and blaming others may give you temporal relief and justify your self-pity it will not help you.

There are many solutions surrounding you right now and I challenge you to take a closer look at what you are already having.
